Hospice is a special way of caring for terminally ill patients and families. The emphasis is on comfort and palliative care, not on cure. Hospice care is holistic. It looks at all aspects of the person, not just the terminal illness. Hospice attempts to meet the patient's emotional, spiritual and psychosocial needs, as well as the physical needs. Our specialized services focus on the family needs by including the family in the care of the patient, as well as offering educational and emotional support. Hospice is a team approach. Jameson Hospice works with the patient's attending physician and with the Hospice Interdisciplinary group to provide quality, palliative care.
At Jameson Hospice, the patient and the family are our patients. We will do everything within our power to offer the care-giving family members the support services that they need during this difficult time.
Jameson Hospice is proud to be a member of the We Honor Veterans (WHV) Level 1. Jameson Hospice is recognized as Level 1and is displayed in the 'WHV Partner Directory' on the WHV website www.wehonorveterans.org. Visit the website for further information.
Services Available
Hospice is a philosophy of care, not a place of care. Jameson Hospice services are provided where ever the patient's place of residence is, their private home, apartment, assisted living, or long term care facility. Jameson Hospice is contracted with all the long term care facilities in Lawrence County.
Physician Services
The patient and family are admitted to the Hospice program with the expectation that the patient’s attending physician will remain actively involved in the care. The Medical Director of Jameson Hospice may assume medical management responsibilities when requested to do so by the attending physician and in concurrence with the wishes of the family.
Nursing Services
Because the Hospice program is primarily a comprehensive home care program, nursing services are available in the home on an intermittent basis. In addition to regularly scheduled visits, a nurse is available on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Medical Social Services
The services of a medical social worker are available in the home on an intermittent basis. Regularly scheduled visits by a medical social worker will be provided for all patients and families admitted to the Hospice program.
Hospice Aide Services
Home Health Aide services include all aspects of personal care available in the home setting. These services are available on an intermittent, regularly scheduled basis.
Spiritual Counseling
When a patient and family are admitted for Hospice care, they will be offered spiritual counseling within their belief system. When the patient has a personal clergy, it is anticipated that he/she will remain actively involved through a working relationship with Hospice. The Hospice Spiritual Coordinator is available for spiritual support when requested.
Direct Care Volunteers
Volunteers are carefully chosen individuals who have comprehensive preparation and a sincere interest in providing a variety of valuable supportive services to the patient and family in the home. These services include such things as companionship, respite for the primary caregiver, shopping and errands.
Nutritional Counseling
A registered dietitian is available for home visits and consultation as needed.
Bereavement Counseling
Counseling and supportive care services are available to family members for up to 12 months after the death of the patient. In addition to trained professional staff, trained volunteers provide bereavement support services to the family members.
Jameson Hospice Bears
After your loved one passes, we will ask you to provide two articles of his or her clothing. From that clothing, our Hospice Bear Volunteers, another wonderful group of people in our community, will make a hand-made personalized stuffed teddy bear as a memento of your loved one. This tribute to your loved one will serve as a keepsake for you to hold tight as you remember them for years into the future.
Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy
Therapy services are available through the Hospice program for the patient in the home on an intermittent basis. The goal of these services is to help improve or maintain the patient's quality of life.
Medical Supplies, Medication and Durable Medical Equipment
Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County will provide medical supplies, durable medical equipment, and medications needed for the palliation and management of the terminal illness and related conditions in the home. This service includes 24-hour availability and delivery when necessary and is provided by agencies/pharmacies under contract with Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County.
Short Term General Inpatient Care
Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County recognizes that the needs of the patient cannot always be met at home. In order to provide continuity of care, general inpatient services will be made available through the Hospice program at local contracted facilities. The decision for short-term general inpatient care is made in conjunction with the patients attending physician and the Jameson Hospice Interdisciplinary Group and is arranged by Hospice. The General Inpatient level of care is provided when the patient needs pain controlled as well as acute or chronic symptom management that cannot feasibly be provided in other settings. The Jameson Friends of Hospice, the fundraising branch of Hospice volunteers, raised money to furnish two beautifully-decorated rooms at the Jameson North campus for general inpatient hospice stays. Hardwood floors, flat-screen TVs, modern décor and the amenities of home are there to keep the patient and the family members comfortable.
Respite Care
Jameson Hospice also recognizes that there may be times during the course of the terminal illness when the family needs relief from care giving responsibilities. Respite care is short term in nature; no more than five consecutive days and will be made available at Jameson North campus inpatient hospice rooms or at contracted long term care facilities in the area.
Jameson Friends of Hospice
These amazing individuals raise funds to subsidize specialized services for the patients and family members of Jameson Hospice. The Friends have uniquely supported our patients and family members in a variety of special situations including purchasing phone cards to a patient who did not have phone service, purchasing a new comfortable mattress for a patient in need and providing care baskets to families when their loved one is receiving general inpatient services.
This invaluable gift of care touches our family members on a very personal level. We are blessed and more than fortunate to have this wonderful group of people, who are our neighbors in our own community, as such an integral piece of the puzzle that makes Jameson Hospice the hospice of choice in our community.
Payment for Hospice Services
Hospice services are paid for in a variety of ways. Hospice is 100% covered by Medicare for all patients with the Medicare Part A benefit for any services related to the hospice diagnosis. Hospice staff will assist you in determining insurance coverage for Hospice services or evaluate your eligibility for financial aid. Patients meeting the criteria for hospice services are not declined care regardless of ability to pay.
