Description:
Respiratory Services is a combination of a diagnostic and therapeutic service. Diagnostic services available include:
Arterial Blood Gases (ABG):
Arterial Blood Gases are performed on a scheduled basis for outpatients and are provided to inpatients as ordered. ABGs are used to evaluate blood oxygen levels and measure how well the lungs and heart perform gas exchange.
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT):
Pulmonary Function tests are performed on a scheduled basis for outpatients and are provided to inpatients as ordered. Outpatients tests are scheduled and performed by the Respiratory staff Monday through Friday at the South Campus. PFTs are used to diagnose obstructive and restrictive airway disease, along with gas exchange abnormalities and lung volume abnormalities.
Electroencephalography (EEG):
EEG’s are scheduled and performed by the Respiratory staff on a scheduled basis for outpatients, Monday through Friday and inpatients tests are provided as ordered. EEGs are used to record the electrical activity of the brain. EEG’s are useful in ruling out seizures, tumors, headaches and strokes.
Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS):
EMG/NCS are performed on a scheduled basis for inpatients and outpatients. Tests are done on Monday for outpatients and as needed for inpatients. EMG/NCS are useful in the diagnosis of nerve and muscle damage such as carpal tunnel syndrome and pinched nerves.
MSLTesting:
MSL (Multi-Sleep Latency) testing is a "nap" test performed on patients to rule out narcolepsy, which is a condition marked by an uncontrollable desire for sleep or by sudden attacks of sleep. MSL testing is scheduled Sunday - Friday following an overnight sleep study..
Sleep Studies:
Sleep Studies are performed by our Respiratory Therapists on a scheduled basis for outpatients. The Sleep Study Laboratory is located at the South Campus on the second floor. Five (5) sleep studies can be performed nightly, Monday-Friday, 8:30 p.m. Sleep study tests are interpreted by Dr. M. Ali, Medical Director of Respiratory Services (board certified in sleep medicine). Sleep studies are performed to determine obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
Methacholine Chloride Challenge Testing:
Methacholine Chloride Challenge testing is used to diagnose hyperactive airway disease in patients who have a chronic cough and shortness of breath with normal breathing tests.
Therapeutic services are offered in the way of treatment modalities for Respiratory-related services such as:
Oxygen Therapy
Ventilator Care
Respiratory Treatments:
Incentive Spirometry
Aerosol Therapy
Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB)
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT)
Postural Draining
BiPap / C-Pap
Jameson’s Respiratory Services is also a clinical teaching site for students of Youngstown State University for Pulmonary Function Testing and Sleep Studies.

Description:
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an exercise program offered for those patients with emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and patients recovering from cancer and lung surgery. Pulmonary Rehabilitation is available to outpatients only upon referral of their physician. Each patient is individually assessed with a wide variety of equipment for their use, specifically: four (4) stationary bicycles, three (3) treadmills, pulleys, dumbbells, two (2) arm ergometers, and pulse oximetry. Patients are exercised with supplemental oxygen if needed. Individual exercise programs are established to enhance pulmonary efficiency and to promote energy conservation by teaching activities of daily living. The participant also is given instruction of proper breathing techniques, proper use of medications and equipment, and is instructed in self-monitoring to detect acute lung infections. A dietician is also available for diet and nutritional counseling.
