Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an exercise program offered for patients with emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and patients recovering from cancer and lung surgery. Pulmonary Rehabilitation is available to outpatients upon referral of their physician. Each patient is individually assessed with a wide variety of equipment for their use, specifically:

  • stationary bicycles
  • treadmills, pulleys, dumbbells
  • arm ergometers, and pulse oximetry

Patients are exercised with supplemental oxygen if needed. Individual exercise programs are established to enhance pulmonary efficiency and to promote energy conservation by teaching activities of daily living. The participant also is given instruction of proper breathing techniques, proper use of medications and equipment, and is instructed in self-monitoring to detect acute lung infections. A dietician is also available for diet and nutritional counseling.
